Visakhapatnam is set to host two major international naval events this month, the prestigious International Fleet Review (IFR) on February 18, followed by Milan-2026, a multinational naval exercise and conclave, on February 19.

In preparation for the high-profile events, Vice Admiral Sushil Menon (VSM), Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, along with senior naval officials, met Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand at the Secretariat on Monday to discuss organisational arrangements.

During the meeting, Vice Admiral Menon briefed the Chief Secretary on the scale and significance of the programmes. He explained that the International Fleet Review would witness participation from a large number of warships, aircraft and naval delegations from across the world. Ships from 19 countries, including Sri Lanka and Iran, are expected to take part, along with nearly 4,000 foreign delegates.

He further informed that three ships and about 150 delegates from the United States, Germany and France would also participate. From India, around 90 naval ships, 45 aircraft and approximately 600 delegates will be part of the events.

The Fleet Review and Milan-2026 will be held along the Visakhapatnam coastline on February 18 and 19 respectively. President of India Droupadi Murmu will review the fleet on February 18, while Governor Justice S. Abdul Nazeer and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will also be present. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to attend the Milan event on February 19. The dignitaries will additionally participate in an International City Parade as part of the celebrations.

Chief Secretary Vijayanand assured the Eastern Naval Command that the state government would extend full cooperation to ensure the success of both events. He directed concerned departments to make comprehensive arrangements, especially in view of the presence of VVIPs. Emphasising the importance of security and protocol, he instructed officials to coordinate closely with naval authorities.

The International Fleet Review is a ceremonial event where the President of India reviews the operational readiness and capabilities of the Indian Navy. When ships from friendly foreign nations also participate, it becomes an International Fleet Review, showcasing maritime cooperation and strength.

Milan is a multinational naval exercise aimed at enhancing cooperation, interoperability and mutual understanding among participating navies. The event also features cultural exchanges and demonstrations by different countries.

Principal Secretary (GAD) J. Shyamala Rao, Protocol Additional Director Mohan Rao, Special Chief Secretary Krishna Babu, IG Operations CH Srikanth and other officials attended the meeting, both in person and virtually.
