Medicover Woman and Child Hospitals, Hi-tech City, successfully treated a 13-year-old boy from Somalia with a severe esophageal stricture. The boy, weighing only 19 kilograms instead of a healthy 50 kilograms, was unable to swallow even saliva, leading to life-threatening malnutrition and growth failure.
Despite multiple endoscopic dilatations, the severe dysphagia persisted, risking aspiration and other complications. A multidisciplinary team at Medicover, led by Dr. Madhumohan Reddy, Senior Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, performed a complex colonic transposition surgery using a retrosternal approach.
The procedure included connecting the esophagus to the colon, the colon to the stomach, and ensuring the colon's functionality. A feeding jejunostomy was also performed to support recovery.
The surgery was a collaborative effort involving Dr. Kishore Reddy Y, Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist and Liver Transplant Surgeon Dr. Ravinder Reddy Parigi, Consultant Paediatrician & Neonatologist and Dr. Janardhan Reddy V Consultant Paediatrician and Intensivist ensured comprehensive care from preparation to recovery. The boy is now recovering well, showing significant improvement in eating and weight gain.
