Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director Ashok Reddy inspected problem-prone areas under O&M Division-4 in Begum Bazar to review long-pending sewerage issues and ongoing repair works.
During the visit, the MD examined the reconstruction of a damaged deep manhole on the 400-mm RCC B-90 main sewer line at Usman Gunj. The manhole had collapsed due to its age, blocking the outlet and causing sewage to overflow onto the main road. Officials informed him that a new manhole is currently being constructed to address the issue.
Ashok Reddy held discussions with officials on providing a permanent solution to recurring sewerage overflow problems in the area. He directed them to prepare comprehensive sewerage network proposals in coordination with GHMC to prevent future disruptions.
The MD observed that in areas such as Feelkhana, Usman Gunj and Begum Bazar, several sewer lines were improperly connected to stormwater drains. He noted that during road and nala covering works by GHMC, some sewer pipelines and manholes were damaged and diverted into the drains, leading to silt accumulation and frequent backflow during the monsoon.
As an immediate measure, he instructed officials to reconstruct damaged manholes, identify and desilt buried manholes, and divert overflowing sewage into drains temporarily. For a permanent solution, he suggested laying a new connectivity pipeline linking the area to the HMWSSB sewer line beyond the Usman Gunj bridge. He also stressed separating sewer lines from stormwater drains to prevent contamination. Senior officials, including CGM Prabhu and other departmental staff, were present during the inspection.
