Telangana Eagle Force Superintendent of Police P. Seetharam cautioned youngsters against falling into the trap of tobacco and nicotine addiction, saying companies are increasingly using attractive flavours, stylish packaging and aggressive marketing to appeal to younger generations.
Speaking at an awareness programme organised at Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar, ahead of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, Seetharam said tobacco use is a major threat to public health and the well-being of families. He urged young people to adopt healthy lifestyles and stay away from addictive substances. A pledge against tobacco consumption was also administered to participants during the event.
Senior Consultant Pulmonologist Dr. Subhakar Kandi said this year’s World No Tobacco Day theme, “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction,” focuses on exposing marketing strategies used to promote tobacco and nicotine products among youth. He noted that flavoured products and social media promotions often create a misleading impression while hiding the serious health consequences of addiction.
Consultant Pulmonologist Dr. E. Ravindra Reddy highlighted the dangers of smoking and smokeless tobacco, linking them to lung disease, cancer, heart disease and stroke. He also warned about the harmful effects of passive smoking on children, elderly people and pregnant women.
The speakers stressed that quitting tobacco at any stage can improve health outcomes and called on families, educators and communities to support tobacco-free living. The programme was attended by doctors, medical staff and hospital personnel.
