DGP’s silent strategy proving effective
Telangana is steadily moving towards becoming a Maoist-free state. Once considered a stronghold of Left-wing extremism, the presence of Maoists in the state has now reduced to a minimal level. At the same time, the number of Maoists voluntarily surrendering and joining the mainstream of society has increased significantly.Security analysts attribute this transformation largely to the silent strategy and meticulous planning of Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy.
Known for his philosophy of “Talk less… Do more,” the DGP is recognized for carefully assessing ground realities without unnecessary publicity. Whether it is tackling Maoist activities or addressing other law-and-order challenges, he is known for quietly studying situations in depth and anticipating their consequences well in advance. B. Shivadhar Reddy has extensive experience in dealing with Maoist issues. Earlier, he served as Superintendent of Police in the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB), which closely monitors Maoist movements. Over the years, he has held key positions including DIG (SIB), IGP, Additional DGP, and now serves as the Director General of Police.
His deep understanding of forest-area operations and Maoist strategies has helped him take precise and well-calculated decisions in maintaining law and order.Under his leadership and initiatives, Telangana has witnessed a record number of Maoist surrenders in recent years. Many top leaders and cadres have laid down their arms and returned to mainstream life.
Police officials believe that such a significant number of surrenders has been possible mainly due to the confidence reposed by Maoist cadres in the police system and the transparent rehabilitation policies implemented under the leadership of DGP Shivadhar Reddy. The Telangana Police have been focusing on humane treatment, confidence-building measures, and rehabilitation support for surrendered Maoists. As a result, the state is now said to be just a step away from being declared a Maoist-free state.
Senior officers say the DGP’s role as a “silent warrior” working towards a peaceful Telangana has been widely appreciated. Interestingly, Shivadhar Reddy’s association with anti-Maoist operations dates back to his early career. When he served as Superintendent of Police of Nalgonda district, Maoist influence was strong and so-called “people’s courts” were frequently organized in rural areas. At that time, political leaders and police officers had to remain on constant alert.
Soon after he assumed charge as SP of Nalgonda, a major encounter took place in the Talla Vellamla village near Chityala, followed by two more significant operations later. Those operations were considered a turning point in curbing Maoist activities in the region. Over the years, his experience and understanding of Maoist operations have played a crucial role in shaping the present surrender-oriented strategy.
Though he personally avoids publicity and rarely speaks about his achievements, DGP B. Shivdhar Reddy continues to quietly pursue his mission of ensuring peace and stability in Telangana.
