Southern States Accuse AP CM of Betrayal in Delimitation Row

  1. One viral post declared: “Chandrababu Naidu TDP will be SOLELY responsible if this PUSHED THROUGH. Because all SOUTH states will LOSE SIGNIFICANCE IN CENTRAL GOVT & BECOME JUST MILKING COW to do HARDWORK PAY-TAXES for COW BELT.” Another warned that the delimitation bill under the guise of women’s reservation would redraw the political map permanently, shifting power northward.
  2. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut amplified the chorus in a widely shared video, stating bluntly: “If Chandrababu Naidu has even a shred of self-respect, he will oppose this kind of delimitation just like MK Stalin is doing.”
  3. Revanth Reddy, Telangana’s Congress Chief Minister, captured the mood by writing directly to Naidu, M.K. Stalin, and Karnataka’s Siddaramaiah, warning of a “southern disadvantage” and calling for a united front against any pro-rata population formula.

As the Centre circulated the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, for delimitation among MPs this week, social media platforms have lit up with outrage directed squarely at Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The veteran TDP leader, a key NDA ally, is being branded a “backstabber” and “betrayer of the South” for what critics call his failure to robustly defend southern interests amid fears that population-based seat redistribution will slash parliamentary representation for states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, and Kerala.

The timing could not be more charged. Just a day before Parliament is set to take up the Women’s Reservation Bill (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam) on April 16—providing 33% seats for women in Lok Sabha and assemblies—Naidu himself fired off letters to party presidents, Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MPs from Andhra Pradesh, and other leaders, urging unanimous support for the historic legislation. While framed as empowerment, the bill’s rollout is explicitly tied to the post-2026 delimitation exercise based on the upcoming census. Southern leaders argue this linkage is a Trojan horse: states that succeeded in population control are now being punished with fewer seats, while high-fertility northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar stand to gain disproportionately.

Revanth Reddy, Telangana’s Congress Chief Minister, captured the mood by writing directly to Naidu, M.K. Stalin, and Karnataka’s Siddaramaiah, warning of a “southern disadvantage” and calling for a united front against any pro-rata population formula. Stalin has already vowed “massive protests” that could bring Tamil Nadu to a standstill, framing it as an assault on federalism. Still, Naidu’s response—rooted in his longstanding NDA partnership—has been notably muted. In earlier interviews, he expressed “100% confidence” in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s wisdom to address southern concerns and insisted delimitation must be separated from population management debates. He has also publicly supported increasing birth rates in Andhra to counter ageing demographics, a stance that drew sharp rebukes from southern allies like BRS leader K.T. Rama Rao, who accused the South of being “punished” for effective family planning.

This perceived equivocation has ignited a firestorm online. On X (formerly Twitter), users from across the South have flooded timelines with accusations of treachery. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut amplified the chorus in a widely shared video, stating bluntly: “If Chandrababu Naidu has even a shred of self-respect, he will oppose this kind of delimitation just like MK Stalin is doing.” Hashtags like #FairDelimitation and #SaveSouthIndia trended as netizens shared maps projecting seat losses: Tamil Nadu and Kerala could lose up to 16 seats combined under 2011 or projected 2026 census figures, while Uttar Pradesh’s tally might surge from 80 to 128.

The backlash is not merely emotional. Analysts note it reflects deep structural anxieties. Southern states contribute disproportionately to India’s GDP through IT, manufacturing, and services, yet their lower fertility rates—achieved through decades of education, healthcare, and family planning aligned with national policy—now threaten to erode their political clout in the world’s largest democracy. Critics argue Naidu’s alliance priorities have trumped regional solidarity. His recent letter endorsing the women’s quota, while silent on safeguards against seat erosion, is being interpreted as tacit approval of the Centre’s roadmap. One user summed up the sentiment: “Nari Shakti Vandan via delimitation on 2011 data isn’t about empowering women—it’s a Trojan horse to redraw Lok Sabha seats [and] punish southern states.”

Dr. Girija Shetkar @GirijaShetkar

Chandrababu Naidu Garu should openly oppose the BJP's Conspiracy to reduce the Lok Sabha seats of South Indian states through Delimitation and stand with the people of South India.

Every citizen of South India wants their rights to be protected and any Political Party that doesn’t stand with the people will not be supported by the people.
