Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy met Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad on Sunday and urged him to approve two nominations under the Governor’s quota for the Telangana Legislative Council. The Chief Minister specifically requested clearance of the names of Professor Kodandaram and former cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin for MLC positions.

Azharuddin, who is currently serving as a Minister in the Telangana Cabinet, is facing a constitutional challenge as he is not a member of either the Legislative Assembly or the Legislative Council. As per constitutional provisions, any person appointed as a Minister must secure membership in either House within six months of assuming office.

With Azharuddin completing six months in office on April 30, the timeline has become critical. If he is not elected or nominated to the legislature before the deadline, he will be required to step down from his ministerial position. This has placed added urgency on the pending MLC nominations under the Governor’s quota.

The government had earlier sent a file recommending nominations to fill the Governor’s quota seats, but the proposal has been pending at Raj Bhavan for some time. Azharuddin’s name is also included in the same list, making the Governor’s decision crucial for his continued role in the Cabinet.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister is understood to have briefed the Governor on the political and constitutional implications of the delay. The state government is keen on an early decision to avoid any administrative or legal complications. With the deadline approaching, attention is now on Raj Bhavan’s response regarding the pending MLC nominations.
