IndiGo names William Walsh as CEO

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, on Tuesday announced the appointment of William Walsh, Director General of International Air Transport Association, as its next Chief Executive Officer. The move comes less than three weeks after the sudden exit of Pieter Elbers, following operational disruptions that drew public criticism and regulatory scrutiny late last year.

A seasoned aviation leader, Walsh — often known as Willie — brings decades of global experience. He has previously served as CEO of British Airways and led International Airlines Group, which operates major carriers across Europe.

According to the airline, Walsh’s tenure at IATA will conclude on July 31, and he is expected to join IndiGo by early August, subject to regulatory approvals. His appointment has been approved by the board of InterGlobe Aviation.

As CEO, Walsh will oversee IndiGo’s overall management and strategic direction, focusing on improving operational performance, expanding the network, and enhancing customer experience as the airline enters its next phase of growth.

Managing Director Rahul Bhatia described Walsh as an “iconic aviation leader” with deep industry expertise and a strong customer-centric approach.

Walsh, who began his career as a pilot, said he was “delighted” to lead IndiGo, highlighting the airline’s strong foundation, vision and workforce commitment.

IndiGo also recently appointed Aloke Singh as Chief Strategy Officer as part of its leadership restructuring.
