Celebrating Christmas

26-12-2024 12:00:00 AM

Christmas is celebrated as a religious and cultural festival worldwide. Observed annually on 25 December, it marks the birth of Jesus Christ and is central to the holiday season. Traditions include carol singing, decorating homes in red and green, and enjoying sumptuous meals. The term ‘Christmas’ originates from ‘Cristes maesse’ or ‘Christ’s Mass,’ a reference to Catholic ceremonies. Santa Claus and the Christmas tree, symbolic of Christ, play pivotal roles. The preparation period, called Advent, begins four weeks prior, with celebrations ending on January 6.

Jubel D'Cruz, Mumbai Bag Limit

The restriction of one handbag per passenger on flights is a balanced move. This policy applies to both domestic and international flights, with baggage allowances differing between economy and business classes. Air India permits a 7 kg handbag for economy class and up to 10 kg for business class. This step encourages passengers to travel light and reduces on-board congestion.----Jayanthi Subramaniam, Mumbai

G.S.T. Reform Needed

The 55th G.S.T. Council meeting ended without addressing key issues like tax rationalization. India’s complex multi-slab G.S.T. system increases compliance burdens and hinders ease of doing business. Comparatively, most nations adopt simpler systems. Structural changes, including narrowing the 0% bracket and recalibrating taxes on petroleum products, are essential. Simplifying indirect taxes while addressing direct tax structures can boost compliance and economic growth.--- Vijay Singh Adhikari, Nainital

Education Redefined

Education today prioritizes quantity over quality, rushing through syllabi without imparting understanding. Modernizing curricula with practical classes, updated industry knowledge, and job skills is vital. Additionally, integrating innovative teaching methods, daily sports, and support for underprivileged students ensures holistic development. Exams should align with the syllabus to promote better learning outcomes. This nine-point plan can revolutionize education, fostering well-rounded and research-driven minds.-----P.V. Nomination Clarity

The Indian Contract Act, 1872, views nominees as fiduciaries holding assets in trust for legal heirs. Recent amendments in banking simplify asset transfer upon an account holder's death, safeguarding the interests of nominees and heirs. By leveraging the nomination facility, account holders can ensure clarity and peace of mind regarding their asset distribution.-----C.K. Subramaniam,Navi Mumbai

Tribute to Shyam Benegal

Shyam Benegal’s passing marks the loss of a cinematic pioneer. His films, like Ankur, Nishant, and Junoon, defined India’s parallel cinema, addressing social issues with unmatched depth. Benegal nurtured talents like Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, and Naseeruddin Shah. His works, including Bharat Ek Khoj, remain landmarks in Indian cinema and television. His legacy will continue to inspire.-----M. Pradyu, Kannur
