A new star is born in the cricketing firmament in the name of Trisha Gongadi. An unbeaten 44 runs and 3/15 with the ball in the U-19 Women’s World Cup final against South Africa is not the only performance but throughout the tournament the girl from Telangana who was made to pick up a plastic bat at the age of two made her presence felt in every match.
Such was her dominance in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where the tournament was held that she is the leading run-scorer with 309 runs and her leg spin bamboozled batters as she picked up seven wickets too and was awarded the player of the match and tournament.
The 19-year-old cricketing sensation dedicated her success to her father Rami Reddy who pushed her into cricket, left his job, moved from Bhadrachalam to Hyderabad to the St John’s Academy to realise his dream as well as his daughter’s to make a name in the world of cricket. When asked about her exploits and being named the player of the tournament, Trisha said, “This means everything to me, right now not able to say anything.
Thank everyone for supporting me. Plan was to always focus on my strengths, did the same thing today as well… Would like to dedicate this to my dad who is here. Always consider myself as an all-rounder. Goal is to play for the country and win more matches,” said Trisha.
Going by the talent, she piled a hundred, two half-centuries and two 40s, at an average of 64.8. In the last 10 innings goes to show her prowess. Given her versatility, who can bowl leg spin and a solid defence as well as all-round hitting ability (and ever willing to change gears when needed) makes her a complete player.
The former Indian cricket team captain and another Hyderabadi Mithali Raj’s prophecy that Trisha would go a long way has come true. Trisha’s journey has just begun, it will not take long for her to enter the senior women’s cricket team, aver cricketing aficionados.
