Eight persons were trapped inside after a section of roof collapsed in the under construction stretch in the tunnel of Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) project on Saturday.   The accident transpired while work was being conducted on the left side of the SLBC tunnel in Domalapenta, located in the Amrabad mandal of Nagarkurnool district. A three-meter section of the roof collapsed at the 14th kilometer mark of the left tunnel. At the time of the incident, there were 40 workers present in the tunnel.

According to reports, the tunnel collapse had occurred due to a sudden inflow of water and soil. The JP Associates and Robin Company, responsible for tunnel boring, stated that the incident had taken place within 30 minutes of starting work at 8am. A loud noise had been heard before water and soil rushed into the tunnel, causing workers to scramble for safety.  Those positioned near the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) had managed to escape, while workers in the front section of the tunnel got trapped.

The excavation was immediately halted, and supervisors quickly evacuated as many workers as possible. The SLBC project has been designed to provide irrigation and drinking water to the backward Nalgonda district through a tunnel from the backwaters of the Srisailam project. As part of this, a tunnel route is being constructed near Domalapenta in Amrabad mandal of Nagarkurnool district.

About 50 workers went into the tunnel on the first ship. Of them, 42 came out and eight people were feared trapped inside the tunnel. Authorities confirmed that the ventilation system inside the tunnel remained functional, ensuring oxygen supply to the trapped workers. Ambulances and medical teams had been placed on high alert, with doctors ready to provide emergency care.

On the instructions of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Ministers N Uttam Kumar Reddy and Jupally Krishna Rao, DIG, IG and senior officials of Irrigation already rushed to the accident site and supervised the rescue operations. Uttam Kumar Reddy assured that the state government was making every possible effort to safely rescue the eight workers trapped inside the SLBC tunnel. He emphasized that all available resources, including specialized rescue teams from Singareni and the Indian Army, were being mobilized to handle the crisis.

“This is an unfortunate incident, but we are committed to bringing them out safely. The state government was leaving no stone unturned. The fire and disaster management teams, irrigation officials, and the police department were working together under senior officers’ supervision. Additionally, the Army rescue team was expected to reach the site by that night, and we had reached out to experts who had handled similar tunnel incidents in Uttarakhand,” Uttam Kumar Reddy stated during a press briefing. On the other hand, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep shock over a mishap at the SLBC tunnel.

He instructed the officials to expedite the necessary rescue operations and save the trapped workers. The Chief Minister instructed the officials of all departments to be alert and take all precautions while undertaking rescue operations.
