Minister for IT and Industries D. Sridhar Babu on Thursday categorically ruled out any move to privatise Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), asserting that the Congress government was committed to protecting the public sector coal mining company.

Speaking to the media at the CLP office, the Minister launched a sharp attack on BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao, questioning why he had remembered Singareni only after 12 years.

He alleged that the previous BRS government had treated the company as an “ATM” and accused KTR of making statements that could damage its reputation.

Sridhar Babu maintained that tenders in Singareni had been conducted transparently since the Congress government assumed office. He alleged that the criticism was being levelled by certain forces unhappy with the changes introduced by the present government.

Claiming that the previous BRS regime had left thousands of crores of rupees in dues to Singareni, the Minister questioned whether members of KTR’s family had effectively controlled the organisation over the past decade.

He advised KTR to refrain from what he termed diversionary politics and blamed the decline in Singareni’s production on the policies pursued by the previous BRS government. He also demanded that the BRS account for the promises made to Singareni workers during its 10-year tenure and disclose how many had been fulfilled.

Sridhar Babu further alleged that the previous government had taken steps towards privatisation by handing over the Tadicherla coal block to a private company.

Reiterating that the Congress government would not permit Singareni’s privatisation, the Minister warned that any attempt to privatise the company would be opposed.
