Doctors at Medicover Cancer Institute successfully treated a rare and aggressive adrenal gland cancer in a 32-year-old patient from Somalia, who is now showing no evidence of disease after completing treatment.

The patient was admitted with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, fever and loss of appetite. Advanced diagnostic tests, including a PET-CT scan, detected a large tumour in the right adrenal region that had spread to nearby organs.

Following detailed evaluation, a multidisciplinary team of specialists performed a complex en bloc surgery involving radical right adrenalectomy, right nephrectomy and right hepatectomy to remove the tumour along with the affected kidney and part of the liver.

Further histopathology and immunohistochemistry tests confirmed the disease as adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC), a rare cancer affecting the outer layer of the adrenal gland. The patient later underwent six cycles of EDP chemotherapy comprising etoposide, doxorubicin and cisplatin under the supervision of Dr. A. Venugopal.

The medical team also included Dr. A V Ravi Kumar and Dr. Kishore Reddy.

Doctors said follow-up PET-CT imaging showed no residual tumour and the patient remains under regular monitoring. According to specialists, ACC is an extremely rare cancer with only one to two cases reported per million people annually, making successful treatment in a young patient particularly significant.
