150 sterilizations, 350 vaccinations done each day
■ On average, around 300-350 vaccinations are administered daily across GHMC limits

■ As per AWBI guidelines, the relocation of sterilized dogs is not permitted

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a sterilization for stray dogs in the city. On average, GHMC administers 300-350 vaccinations daily, while over 150 surgeries and around 150 sterilizations are conducted each day.
Speaking to Metro India, Abdul Wakil, Chief Veterinary Officer, said, “GHMC is operating on high alert, particularly in areas near schools, playgrounds, the Musi River, and army bases. Nearly four lakh students have received awareness training as part of the initiative, alongside ongoing sterilization efforts.” The civic body is also placing water bowls, administering vaccinations, performing surgeries, and conducting sterilizations.
In line with the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules-2023, GHMC is conducting extensive mass sterilization and anti-rabies vaccination drives at five dedicated ABC centers. The operations are supported by a team of 18 veterinarians, 22 para-veterinarians, and 49 specialized dog-catching vehicles. Euthanasia is reserved strictly for terminally ill or severely injured dogs. GHMC corporator Kopula Narasimha Reddy is assisting by providing water bowls for street dogs in Mansoorabad, LB Nagar zone.
GHMC provides water bowls to prevent dehydration, heatstroke, and aggression, thereby reducing the street dog menace and attacks on people, especially children. Additionally, GHMC focuses To address public concerns, GHMC has created various platforms for reporting complaints about aggressive or rabid dogs. Residents can now report issues via a toll-free helpline, a mobile app, a web portal, email, social media, and even the Dial 100 emergency service.
