India’s Gen Z is redefining travel trends, moving away from the traditional annual vacation and embracing frequent short trips throughout the year. According to Airbnb’s report, “Never the Same: The New Rules of Gen Z Travel in India,” nearly 87 percent of young travelers now prefer holidays lasting less than a week, with many opting for multiple getaways instead of one extended break.

The shift reflects changing work patterns, study schedules, and financial priorities. Young travelers increasingly value flexibility and affordability, making short trips easier to plan and manage. Airbnb reported a 30 percent year-on-year rise in Gen Z travel searches, while bookings for domestic stays lasting two to six nights surged by nearly 80 percent. Group travel is also evolving, with more than half of Gen Z travelers preferring shared homes over hotel rooms. Shared accommodations offer lower costs and greater opportunities for social interaction.

“One long vacation doesn’t really fit my work life anymore. Short weekend trips are easier to manage, less stressful, and I can plan them quickly with friends whenever there’s time,” said Shravani V, a 25-year-old employee at a co-working firm in Hyderabad.

“Travel for me is about experience. We keep it simple, go with friends, explore nearby places and try local food,” said Yashaswi Karunakar, a final-year BSc student. Experts note that road trips and spontaneous getaways are gaining popularity as young travelers seek relaxation, freedom and meaningful experiences over conventional sightseeing.
