In a major technological upgrade aimed at enhancing fire-fighter safety and improving emergency response, the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department is planning to deploy robots and drones for fire fighting operations in hazardous environments.

Officials said the initiative is designed to address situations where human intervention is either risky or impossible, such as high-rise building fires, chemical leaks, and industrial accidents. The department plans to initially introduce one firefighting robot and four advanced drones as part of this modernisation effort.

Director General of Fire Services P. Venkata Ramana said the move marks a significant step towards integrating cutting-edge technology into emergency services. “We are planning to deploy a robot and drones particularly in scenarios where firefighters cannot safely access the site. This will help us respond faster and reduce risks to personnel,” he said.

The drones, equipped with a payload capacity of up to 20 kilograms, can carry water, fire-extinguishing chemicals, or essential firefighting equipment. These aerial units will enable targeted firefighting in difficult terrains and elevated structures, where traditional methods face limitations.

As part of the rollout, the department will also train firefighters in operating the robotic and drone systems. Officials emphasised that skill development will be a key component to ensure effective deployment during emergencies.

Visakhapatnam has been identified as the first city to pilot the technology. During the ongoing Fire Safety Week, observed from April 14 to 20, the department plans to conduct a live demonstration through a mock drill at a high-rise building near the beach. In this drill, drones will be used to simulate firefighting operations, showcasing their efficiency in tackling flames at elevated levels.

To facilitate the initiative, the Fire Services Department has reached out to the Andhra Pradesh Drone Corporation and Andhra Pradesh Technology Services Limited for technical support and coordination. Tenders have already been floated for the procurement of drones, with officials confirming that the latest firefighting technologies will be incorporated.

Authorities believe that the introduction of robotics and drone-based firefighting will not only enhance operational efficiency but also significantly improve safety standards. The initiative places Andhra Pradesh among the few states in India adopting advanced, tech-driven solutions to modernise disaster response systems.
