Since the Andhra Pradesh government came to power has shown interest on developing Buddhist sites and with an allocation of Rs 2,541 crore for the promotion of tourism in the Union Budget 2025-26, the Andhra Government is prioritizing the development of key pilgrimage destinations, including those associated with Buddhism.
While the traditional tourism spots such as Araku Valley, Kanaka Durga temple and Vishakhapatnam have takers, the government is promoting Buddhist sites in a big way. Andhra Pradesh is home to 20 sites including Amaravati, Nagarjunakonda, Bojjannakonda, and Thotlakonda—this initiative presents an opportunity to draw global visitors and strengthen its position as a premier heritage tourism destination. The state's rich Buddhist legacy, spanning centuries, could now be leveraged under the Centre’s Swadesh Darshan Scheme, which focuses on developing thematic tourist circuits.
The Centre’s commitment to developing Buddhist tourism is a continuation of its July 2024 Budget focus on religious and spiritual tourism. The Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya (Bihar) and Rajgir were among the first sites identified under this plan. Now, Sitharaman has confirmed that the Union Government will expand this initiative to more destinations linked to the life and teachings of Lord Buddha.
For Andhra Pradesh, this comes as a timely intervention. The Amaravati Stupa, one of India’s oldest Buddhist monuments, and the Nagarjunakonda site, a major Buddhist center in ancient times, hold immense potential to attract international tourists, especially from Buddhist-majority countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, and Myanmar.
If Amaravati and Nagarjunakonda are included in the Buddhist Tourist Circuit, the state could see a significant increase in international tourist footfall, enhanced infrastructure, and better preservation of historical sites. The state government is expected to work closely with the Centre to ensure that Amaravati, Nagarjunakonda, and other significant sites are included in these high-priority destinations.
By developing Buddhist circuits, the state aims to create a seamless experience for foreign tourists, especially from Asian countries like Vietnam, South Korea, Srilanka, Nepal and China. These circuits will include not only the historical sites but also accommodation options, transportation facilities, and local guides who are knowledgeable about Buddhist history and culture.
In order to provide a smooth and wholesome experience for the tourists, the Tourism department is also planning on developing virtual tours in which the tourists can experience the Buddhist sites in a 4-Dimensional view by scanning a simple QR code that is displayed at the site. This integrated approach will make it easier for visitors to explore the Buddhist heritage of Andhra Pradesh.
Speaking to Metro India, A. Padmavati, Executive Director of APTDC, said that the State Government is committed towards developing the Tourism sector and thus charting out for implementing best practices to boost tourism. She further said that the officials are working on modalities in developing tourism circuits across the State and talks are going on with the service providers in regard to accommodation and travel.
In addition to attracting foreign tourists, the development of Buddhist circuits can also contribute to local economic development. It can create jobs in the tourism sector, such as hospitality, transportation, and handicrafts. By promoting Buddhist tourism, the state can showcase its rich cultural heritage and generate revenue.
With the Union Government’s renewed focus on Buddhist tourism, infrastructure development, and skill enhancement, Andhra Pradesh is well-positioned to reap substantial benefits. By leveraging these initiatives, the state can revitalize its tourism industry, attract international visitors, and enhance economic growth through job creation and increased revenue in the hospitality sector.
