Afghans seek jobs, education under Taliban

Kabul: As the Taliban marks five years since returning to power in Afghanistan, residents say improved security has brought relief but are calling for jobs and wider access to education.

The Taliban seized power on Aug 15, 2021, as US and NATO troops withdrew after two decades of war. It later barred girls above 12 from secondary and higher education and imposed restrictions on women’s employment and movement.

The United Nations said reduced conflict had brought benefits but restrictions on women and girls were hampering Afghanistan’s recovery.

UNESCO said 2.4 million girls are excluded from secondary education, while 53% of primary school-age children are out of school. The Taliban says it has improved security, stabilised the currency and created jobs. Russia remains the only country to formally recognise its government.
