It is a matter of a push and a shove. The Telangana government has begun work on constituting the Yadagirigutta Temple Board, modelled on the prestigious Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) Trust Board, which oversees the world-renowned Tirumala temple.

Following a major revamp, the Yadagirigutta temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha Swamy has witnessed a surge in footfalls and revenue. Weekend visitors exceed 40,000, while festivals and Brahmotsavams draw over 50,000 devotees. Annual revenue has skyrocketed to Rs. 150-200 crore, a significant leap from a few crores of rupees some years ago.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had earlier announced the plan to elevate Yadagirigutta Temple’s status to match TTD, and officials have now accelerated efforts to turn this vision into reality.

Amendments to Telangana Endowment Act

To facilitate the formation of the Yadagirigutta Temple Board, necessary amendments to the Telangana Endowment Act are being drafted.

Unlike Andhra Pradesh’s Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowment Act of 1987, which governs the TTD, Telangana’s existing Endowment Act does not provide for a dedicated trust board for any shrine. The Law Department has reviewed the proposed amendments, and a draft is being prepared for Cabinet approval.

It may be noted that CM Revanth Reddy has directed officials to study the structure and functioning of the Tirumala Board to replicate its success at Yadagirigutta. During a meeting held a few months ago, the CM emphasized that the proposed Yadagirigutta Temple Board must be established with autonomy and efficiency, ensuring it operates independently of the Endowment Department for its day-to-day activities.

TTD Board, a model for success

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, established in 1932, serves as a blueprint for Yadagirigutta temple to have its own Trust Board. Operating as an autonomous body, TTD manages temple funds, administration, and salaries, development and spiritual activities without reliance on government support.

Its Board of Trustees has expanded over the years from five in 1951 to 24 members at present, reflecting its growth and success. The Yadagirigutta Temple Board aims to emulate this model, channeling its growing revenue towards further development and efficient management.

With the groundwork firmly in place, the proposed Yadagirigutta Trust Board promises to transform the temple into a premier spiritual destination, rivaling the Tirumala shrine in stature and significance.
