State’s biggest forensic lab coming up at Tullur: DGP

Regional Forensic Science Laboratories (RFSLs) are the backbone of police investigations and play a crucial role in establishing scientific evidence in criminal cases, Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta said on Saturday. During his visit to Rajamahendravaram, the DGP said the State was constructing a State-level Forensic Science Laboratory at Tullur in Amaravati at a cost of Rs.253 crore. 

Spread across 2 lakh square feet, the facility would be the largest State-level forensic laboratory in the country, he said. The DGP said RFSLs at several locations across Andhra Pradesh, including Rajamahendravaram, Tirupati, Anantapur and Visakhapatnam, were being modernized to strengthen forensic support for police investigations.

He said the forensic system had enabled the police to considerably speed up the processing of crucial evidence. DNA reports are currently being provided within seven days, while reports in highly critical cases are being made available within 13 hours, Gupta said. The police department was also setting up CLICK (Cybercrime Investigation and Control/related cybercrime centers) at the district level to strengthen the response to cybercrimes, he said.

Referring to security arrangements for the Godavari Pushkarams in Rajamahendravaram, the DGP said advanced drones and CCTV cameras operating in recording mode would be deployed to monitor crowds and strengthen security during the event. He said the police would use technology extensively for crowd management and surveillance to ensure the safety of devotees and prevent congestion during the Pushkarams.
