A person is speaking comfortably with family members in the morning. A little later, their speech becomes slurred, a glass slips from their hand, and one side of their face begins to droop. Could it be fatigue? A sudden fall in blood pressure? Recognizing the warning signs and seeking emergency medical attention without delay can improve the chances of receiving appropriate treatment. Stroke awareness, therefore, is not merely a medical concern; it is an essential part of public health.

What happens during a stroke?

The brain regulates vital functions such as movement, speech, vision, memory and thought. Brain cells depend on a continuous supply of oxygen and nutrients through the bloodstream. When this supply is interrupted, or when a blood vessel ruptures and causes bleeding in the brain, a stroke occurs. Stroke is broadly classified into two types. Ischaemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked, commonly by a blood clot.  Haemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel ruptures and bleeds into or around the brain.

On World Stroke Day, the message is clear: recognizing the warning signs of stroke is a responsibility that extends beyond healthcare professionals. Every family should know what to look for and how to respond. Sudden facial drooping, weakness of an arm or leg, difficulty speaking, loss of balance or abrupt visual changes should never be ignored. Recognize the symptoms. Act without delay. Seek emergency medical care. Timely intervention can preserve brain function; improve the chances of recovery and save lives.
