World Health Day 2026

Metro India News | Hyderabad

Observed every year on April 7, World Health Day 2026 highlights the importance of preventive care, scientific awareness, and collective responsibility towards building a healthier society. With the theme “Together for Health, Stand with Science,” experts stress the need to address rising lifestyle diseases, especially among senior citizens, through early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and healthier living practices.

According to Dr B Venkat Nani Kumar, Consultant Internal Medicine, Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, conditions such as hypertension, cardiac diseases, diabetes, kidney infections, cancer, tuberculosis, joint disorders and vision problems commonly affect elderly individuals. These ailments can be effectively managed through timely medical care that may include allopathic treatment, physiotherapy, lifestyle correction, and supportive therapies.

Mental health concerns are also increasingly observed in older adults. Depression remains one of the most common conditions, often presenting persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, fatigue, disturbed sleep patterns, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. Early identification and counselling support play a vital role in improving quality of life.

Neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease cause gradual decline in memory and cognitive abilities. These conditions may be associated with aging, high blood pressure, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or hormonal imbalances. Although progression may be slow, mental stimulation through reading, social interaction, yoga, meditation, and recreational activities helps maintain cognitive health.

Musculoskeletal disorders including arthritis and osteoporosis significantly impact mobility and independence. Regular exercise, balanced nutrition rich in calcium and vitamin D, along with medical supervision, can help manage symptoms and reduce complications.

Blood pressure management remains a cornerstone of preventive healthcare. Maintaining ideal weight, consuming a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, regular physical activity, avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol intake, and routine health checkups are essential steps in controlling hypertension.

On this World Health Day, doctors emphasize that awareness, healthy lifestyle choices, and trust in scientific medical guidance can help individuals lead longer, healthier, and more productive lives. Prevention, early diagnosis, and holistic care remain the pillars of healthy ageing.
