Telugu film industry revival spurs reform push

The Telugu film industry has witnessed a notable revival over the past two months, with increased theatrical footfalls and strong performances from content-driven, small and medium-budget films. The resurgence has renewed optimism among independent filmmakers and producers, highlighting the continued importance of theatrical cinema.

Against this backdrop, a producers’ panel(progressive panel) supported by K Ashok Kumar, Damu and Mythri Ravi has unveiled a reform-focused manifesto aimed at strengthening the industry and supporting new entrants. Key proposals include cashless medical insurance of up to Rs 5 lakh for eligible producers and a Rs 50 lakh annual emergency medical fund for members facing critical health crises. 

The panel also plans to convert around 306 annual memberships into lifetime memberships, establish a single-window helpdesk for debut producers and create incubation support for promising content. Other priorities of the panel include women’s safety, regular dialogue with labor unions, greater transparency, monthly member updates, anti-piracy measures, and efforts to reduce VPF and multiplex-related costs. The manifesto also calls for regulating online ticketing convenience fees and excessive food and beverage prices at multiplexes.
