Anecdotes on Curiosity

Albert Einstein said, “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.” Curiosity drives observation, critical thinking, perseverance, experimentation, and discovery. During a voyage from Europe to India, C. V. Raman became fascinated by the deep blue colour of the Mediterranean Sea and the sky.

His curiosity led to the discovery of the Raman Effect, which describes the scattering of light accompanied by changes in energy and direction. This work earned him the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics, making him the first Asian scientist to receive the honour.

Marie Curie demonstrated extraordinary determination in her study of radioactivity. Working in a poorly equipped shed, she processed tons of pitchblende ore to isolate minute quantities of radium. One evening, she noticed a faint glow from her samples in the dark. Instead of dismissing it, she pursued its cause with dedication. Her pioneering work transformed science and earned her two Nobel Prizes, proving the power of curiosity and perseverance.

A similar incident occurred during my university days. One professor supervised six PhD students who all reported negative results while attempting to synthesize a compound. Only the seventh student achieved success. The professor pointed out that the earlier students had not failed; they had demonstrated which approaches would not work.  

Organic chemist Asima Chatterjee was the first woman in India to earn a doctorate in science and later became the first woman General President of the Indian Science Congress. Her research on natural products contributed to the development of anti-epileptic and anti-malarial medicines, including Ayush-56. By combining traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with modern chemistry, she improved countless lives and inspired generations of scientists.

These stories show that science advances through curiosity, careful observation, patience, and perseverance. Asking questions, exploring the unknown, and learning from failures can lead to discoveries that transform the world. Every student who remains curious may one day contribute something extraordinary.
