Study at IITs for free!

04-11-2026 12:00:00 AM

No Fees, No JEE, No Classroom

metro india news  I hyderabad : If you thought learning from an IIT requires clearing JEE, paying lakhs in fees, or moving to a campus, think again. India's top Indian Institutes of Technology are offering 19 high-demand technical courses completely free of cost on the Government's SWAYAM/NPTEL platform, and they are better than most paid private bootcamps charging Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh.

A list of these courses, curated by educator Amisha Yadav, has gone viral on X with over 2 million views, with users calling it "officially from Indian IITs, no fees, no entrance exam, no catch."

The claim is true. All 19 courses are live, open for enrolment for the July-December 2026 session, and accessible to anyone from a Class 12 student to a 60-year-old working professional.

What is this free program?

The courses are offered under NPTEL - National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning - a joint project of IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati and IISc Bangalore, funded by the Ministry of Education.

They are hosted on SWAYAM, India's free education portal. SWAYAM now has over 14,800 courses and over 5.6 crore enrolments. NPTEL is its technical wing.

How it works: Learning is 100 percent free forever. You get video lectures by IIT professors, downloadable notes, weekly assignments and discussion forums at no cost. There is no entrance exam, no JEE, no age limit and no degree requirement. Anyone can join.

Certificate is optional and cheap. If you want a certificate with the IIT logo, you pay Rs 1,000 and appear for a proctored exam at a centre in your city. There are centres in over 150 cities. Otherwise you can just learn for free.

Duration for most courses is eight or twelve weeks. The January-April 2026 batch started on Jan 19. The July-December 2026 batch, for which these 19 courses are listed, will start on July 21, 2026. Enrolment closes around August. Exams will be on Oct 16-17 and Nov 14-15, 2026.

Artificial Intelligence and Next-Gen Tech

The AI track includes Artificial Intelligence: Foundations and Algorithms which teaches search, logic and knowledge representation, the foundation for any AI engineer. Introduction to Large Language Models explains how ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are built, trained, fine-tuned and used with RAG, the most demanded skill in 2026.

Generative AI for Computer Vision is taught by Prof. Arijit Sur of IIT Guwahati and covers GANs, diffusion models and image generation like Midjourney. Programming with Generative AI shows how to use Copilot and ChatGPT to code ten times faster, ideal for developers. Natural Language Processing is for building chatbots, translation and sentiment analysis systems. Computer Vision covers face recognition and object detection for self-driving cars.

Core Computer Science

The core CS track includes Data Structures and Algorithms using Java, the exact subject asked in FAANG interviews. Data Structures and Algorithm Design covers advanced algorithm design. Database Management System covers SQL, indexing and transactions, asked in every tech interview. Programming in Java is by IIT Kharagpur's Prof. Debasis Samanta, one of NPTEL's most popular courses with over two lakh learners. Programming in Modern C++ covers industry-standard C++ 17 and 20. Introduction to Operating Systems covers process, memory and file systems. Python for Data Science is the perfect first course for beginners with no coding background.

Data, Cloud and Cyber Security

This track includes Data Science for Engineers, an IIT Madras course with eight weeks of Python, stats and case studies. Cloud Computing is IIT Kharagpur's legendary course by Prof. Soumya Kanti Ghosh covering AWS, virtualization, edge and serverless. More than 1.5 lakh people enrol in it every year. Ethical Hacking is by IIT Kharagpur's Prof. Indranil Sengupta and covers penetration testing, Kali Linux and dos attacks. Cyber Security and Privacy covers cryptography, network security and privacy laws.

Management plus Tech Combo

The combo track includes Digital Marketing in the AI Era which explains how AI and LLMs change SEO, ads and content marketing. Corporate Finance is for tech managers and startup founders and covers valuation and capital structure.

Why This Is Better Than Private Boot camps?

A private bootcamp in Hyderabad, Bangalore or online charges Rs 40,000 to 80,000 for three months, often taught by freshers, with pre-recorded low-quality videos and no recognised certificate.

NPTEL offers IIT professors with over 20 years’ experience, updated syllabus every semester, weekly live doubt sessions, all-India exam credibility that recruiters at Infosys, TCS, Wipro and Cognizant accept, and even academic credit transfer. Under UGC's 2021 rules, colleges can transfer up to 40 percent credits from SWAYAM courses. More importantly, you can audit forever at zero cost. You can repeat the course.
