metro india news I hyderabad : Minister for Irrigation, Food and Civil Supplies Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has described the campaign led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to protect every eligible citizen’s right to vote as a significant moment in the country’s democratic journey. In a statement on electoral accountability and democratic institutions, Uttam Kumar Reddy said that democracy derived its strength from people's confidence that every eligible citizen could exercise the right to vote and that every vote would be counted fairly.
He observed that growing concerns over errors in electoral rolls, lack of transparency in procedures and alleged bias in the revision process warranted a transparent investigation and credible responses from the Election Commission.
Referring to the INDIA bloc's mobilisation in Delhi, Uttam Kumar Reddy said Rahul Gandhi had emerged as the central figure in bringing opposition parties together on the crucial issue of electoral accountability. He noted that Rahul Gandhi had led thousands of INDIA bloc leaders, workers and supporters in a march towards the Supreme Court on October 12, protesting alleged irregularities in the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Several prominent opposition leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Akhilesh Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav, had participated in the mobilisation.
The Minister said the subsequent legal challenge and the Supreme Court's decision to seek responses from the Election Commission and its commissioners reflected the importance of addressing the concerns raised. He also referred to the symbolic public impeachment proceeding organised by the INDIA bloc on October 31 against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Presided over by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, the proceeding featured a resolution moved by Mallikarjun Kharge outlining six allegations against the Chief Election Commissioner.
Uttam Kumar Reddy clarified that the exercise was a political protest and not a formal constitutional impeachment. He said the subsequent march and public rally at Ramlila Maidan demonstrated the opposition's determination to take the issue of electoral accountability to the people.
The Minister stressed that while updating electoral rolls was essential, the process must be accompanied by adequate safeguards to ensure that no eligible voter was wrongly excluded. Transparency, accessible correction mechanisms and impartial implementation were indispensable to maintaining public confidence, he said.
Describing the INDIA bloc as a coalition of parties with diverse political histories, regional interests and priorities, Uttam Kumar Reddy said bringing them together around a common democratic cause required leadership, mutual trust and a clear understanding of the national interest. He said Rahul Gandhi had provided direction and a strong public voice to this collective effort.
"This is a defining test for our democratic institutions. Raising questions about electoral processes is not an attack on democracy; it is part of the effort to strengthen it," the Minister observed. Uttam Kumar Reddy said the scale of the mobilisation in Delhi could mark a turning point in India's democratic life, as concerns that had remained largely unaddressed were now being voiced collectively and forcefully.
He further observed that Rahul Gandhi's emergence as the principal leader of the INDIA bloc's campaign had strengthened his national political standing, with the possibility of his leading the country as Prime Minister becoming increasingly distinct. However, he added that the people would ultimately decide the country's political future.
The Minister called for protecting every eligible citizen's vote, upholding constitutional values and ensuring that every democratic institution continued to earn the trust and confidence of the people.
