In a move aimed at promoting austerity and reducing government expenditure, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Andhra Pradesh president and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao has voluntarily returned the bulletproof vehicle allotted to him by the government and scaled down his security arrangements.
Citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for fuel conservation and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s appeal for austerity under the “My Nation, My Responsibility” campaign, Palla said public representatives must lead by example during challenging economic and global conditions.
The TDP leader currently enjoys Y-category security, under which a bulletproof vehicle and enhanced security personnel had been provided. However, he decided to surrender the vehicle to the police department, stating that unnecessary expenditure from the public exchequer should be avoided.
Palla also requested officials to reduce his security deployment from 2+2 gunmen to a smaller 1+1 arrangement. He announced that he would henceforth use his personal vehicle for constituency visits and would avoid availing facilities such as green channels and excessive escort convoys.
Speaking on the decision, Palla Srinivasa Rao said the ongoing tensions in West Asia and the resulting concerns over fuel supplies have made it necessary for public leaders to adopt responsible and cost-effective practices.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi advised citizens to reduce petrol and diesel consumption, while Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu called for cutting down wasteful expenditure. Inspired by those appeals, I decided to act in the spirit of ‘My Nation, My Responsibility,’” he said.
