The Neuro Sciences team at Medicover Hospitals stated on Thursday that Parkinson’s Disease occurs due to the gradual degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. Patients suffering from Parkinson’s Disease commonly experience tremors of the hands at rest, stiffness of limbs, slowness of movement, imbalance while walking, frequent falls, sleep disturbances, and in some advanced cases, memory impairment and cognitive decline. The specialists explained that Parkinson’s Disease progresses through different stages.

They  highlighted that advanced Parkinson’s Disease may require additional interventions for better symptom control, one of which is Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), which is increasingly being used to improve symptom management and quality of life. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Srinivas Dussa mentioned that Deep Brain Stimulation is not a cure for Parkinson’s Disease, but it can significantly help selected patients by reducing tremors, rigidity and movement fluctuations.  The doctors shared the case of a 60-year-old patient Rakesh diagnosed with advanced Parkinson’s Disease, who recently underwent DBS surgery and has shown encouraging improvement in movement control and overall stability following the procedure.

The multidisciplinary Neuro Sciences team which included included Dr. Srinivas Dussa, Dr. Ramesh Shighakolli, Dr. Rohit Ramesh, Dr. Vikas Agarwal, and Dr. Sudheer emphasized that successful Parkinson’s management requires a strong multidisciplinary approach to provide long-term comprehensive care.
