Maheshwara Medical College trains doctors to reduce newborn deaths

07-02-2026 12:00:00 AM

Sangareddy: India loses one million newborns each year, with four-fifths of deaths due to preventable causes such as birth asphyxia, prematurity, and infections. Telangana’s Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR) is 25 per 1,000 live births—below the national average of 28 but highest among southern states—resulting in about 20,000 newborn deaths annually. Preventing these deaths requires interventions across all age groups, from adolescence to the postnatal period.

To strengthen newborn care, Maheshwara Medical College, Chitkul Village, Sanga Reddy, conducted workshops on Essential Newborn Care and Neonatal Resuscitation on Dec 13–14, 2025, and Jan 9, Jan 23, and Feb 6, 2026. The workshops trained doctors and nurses in managing asphyxia, infections, hypothermia, and feeding difficulties in labor rooms and operation theaters.

Dr. Krishna Rao emphasized hands-on, performance-based training in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics, Indian Academy of Pediatrics, and National Neonatology Forum. Dr. Mettu Pradeep Reddy and Dr. M. Manjunath highlighted that practical training, simulation exercises, and faculty guidance equip participants to follow WHO and UNICEF protocols, ensuring safer births.

These efforts align with the India Newborn Action Plan, aiming to achieve a single-digit NMR by 2030, ensuring every newborn receives skilled care at birth.
