Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed the Hyderabad Water Board to draft a comprehensive plan to ensure safe drinking water for Greater Hyderabad's growing population through 2050. The CM emphasized the need for long-term infrastructure to address the region's rapid expansion.

Mallanna Sagar chosen for Godavari Phase 2

After reviewing consultancy reports, the government selected Mallanna Sagar as the water source for the Godavari Phase 2 project.

Before that CM and officials examined proposals to lift water either from Mallanna Sagar or Kondapochamma Sagar as the water source for the Godavari phase 2 project for Hyderabad's drinking water needs.

Based on the reports submitted by the consultancies and in view of adequate availability of water and reasonable lifting cost, the meeting decided to take up the drinking water supply project from Mallanna Sagar.

Also, CM approved increasing water supply from 15 TMC to 20 TMC to meet future demand.

Officials briefed the CM on the city's water distribution system, which includes 13.79 lakh tap connections and a 9,800 km pipeline network. Water is currently drawn from Manjeera, Singur, Godavari, and Krishna rivers. Plans were discussed to integrate Godavari Phase 2 water into Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs.

Financial challenges highlighted

Water Board MD Ashok Reddy presented the income and expenditure report, revealing a revenue deficit of ₹8,800 crores due to unpaid electricity bills, loans, and pending dues from various government departments.

The CM called for immediate measures to enhance revenue, recover dues, and secure low-interest loans for new projects.

Pipeline modernization and sewage plan

Acknowledging outdated pipelines from 1965, the CM ordered the preparation of a project to construct modern pipelines with potential funding from the Jal Jeevan Mission. He also stressed the need for an integrated sewage management plan alongside water supply improvements.

This comprehensive approach aims to secure Hyderabad’s water future while addressing current challenges efficiently. The meeting was attended by Chief Minister's Advisor Vem Narender Reddy, Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari, Municipal Secretary Dana Kishore, and other key officials from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) and GHMC.
