The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a special inspection drive to check fire safety preparedness across the city. As part of the State government’s “Praja Palana – Pragathi Pranalika” 99-day action plan, officials focused on commercial establishments along major roads.

The Town Planning Wing carried out inspections across all six zones of GHMC, examining 252 buildings for compliance with mandatory fire safety regulations. The teams checked whether establishments had proper fire safety infrastructure, including functional extinguishers, alarms, and emergency exits. Special attention was given to cellars and storage areas to ensure hazardous materials were not kept in ways that could increase fire risks.

Where officials found fire safety equipment missing, non-functional, or poorly maintained, notices were issued directing owners to install or repair the systems promptly. In cases where hazardous materials were improperly stored, occupants were advised to remove them immediately to prevent potential accidents.

While most commercial establishments were found to have basic fire safety measures in place, a few were lacking adequate facilities. GHMC officials said these cases will be closely monitored to ensure compliance.

GHMC Commissioner R. V. Karnan stated that such inspection drives will continue periodically to enhance fire safety preparedness and reduce the risk of fire-related incidents in the city. Officials also emphasized creating awareness among building owners and occupants about the importance of maintaining fire safety standards.

The drive underscores GHMC’s commitment to public safety and proactive measures to prevent accidents in Hyderabad’s rapidly growing commercial zones.
