Come Rain, Come Shine

Khush Raho with Sangeeta

It has been hard to get out of bed lately. In the last two to three weeks I have noticed that I am able to stay in bed until 7:00 a.m., when the cook arrives. I could stay longer, were she not ringing the doorbell. In general my energy levels have been much lower too.

I did a quick check of everything. No fever, no infection, blood work is fine, nothing much else has changed in my routine. I still meditate every morning and then carry on with the business of the day. So what has changed? August 12 brings a total solar eclipse, and that day is also going to witness some unusual cosmic events, a morning six-planet parade, and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower under pitch-dark, moonless skies at night. The solar eclipse will not be visible in India, but we will surely feel its impact on a planetary level. The slower pace my body is exhibiting feels like exactly that, a signal to look inward, to evaluate and observe more. A sign from the universe? Absolutely!

We are also in Sawan, the monsoon season that ancient Indian wisdom has always understood as a time to turn inward. Ayurveda recommends lighter living during these months, as the body's digestive fire is naturally lower. The dense, fluid energy of the rain creates a heavier, slower frequency in the environment, and sensitive people feel this acutely. What I had been interpreting as low energy was perhaps simply my body responding, quite correctly, to the season. Just an adjustment to nature’s own rhythm.

What has also changed is the lovely golden light of the sun, which has been mostly absent. The monsoon has finally arrived in Hyderabad, a little late, but thank the Lord it has. Every day when it is grey outside, windy, and raining, I give thanks to the universe. I am so grateful that agriculture, water supplies, and the food supplies that depend on them will be sustained by this rain. There have been predictions of deficit rainfall this year, the day it rains, I say a thanks and wish the deficit smaller and smaller.

But the sun is critical to us, it feeds all life on our planet, be it trees, animals, sea beings, human beings, all sentient beings rely on the sun to grow and be nourished. Rain and sun, contraction and expansion, eternal movement.

I decided I would make an effort to go out and soak in sunlight whenever possible. A daily dose of sunlight does more than most of us realise. It promotes Vitamin D production in the body, has an antibacterial effect, and clears negative energy from our homes, enhancing their vibrations. We can also fill our aura with sun energy by simply setting an intention as we sit in quiet awareness. The sun carries very high frequency vibrations that can disintegrate negative thoughts and emotions. Ancient wisdom has long shown us that maintaining our energetic hygiene keeps us healthy on all levels, physical, emotional, and mental. For areas in my home that don't get sunlight, I do a salt water mop, followed by a tea light diffuser using an essential oil blend that dispels stale energy and brightens the air with joy. And if your laundry area gets direct sunlight, consider yourself lucky.

I wish everyone a mindful and contemplative Sawan. The sun will return, as it always does, in the inevitable rhythm of the seasons. When it does, we will realign to a different energy. Small rituals. Profound healing.
