Allegations of favoritism and coterie politics within the ruling Congress in Telangana are once again drawing attention, with critics claiming that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is increasingly giving priority to leaders from his own inner circle while many senior party figures remain without opportunities.

The debate has intensified after Vem Narender Reddy was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, with several political observers saying the move has once again highlighted the growing influence of a select group around the Chief Minister. Despite the presence of several senior leaders in the party, many of them have not been given key positions, leading to growing dissatisfaction among the old guard of the Congress.

Since the Congress government came to power in Telangana, discussions have been gaining ground within political circles that a special coterie has emerged around Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. According to observers, certain leaders close to the Chief Minister appear to have gained increasing influence in decision-making processes. Key political opportunities, nominations and positions are reportedly going mainly to leaders who are considered close to him.

Several Congress leaders have also commented that this group around the Chief Minister is influencing both government decisions and party affairs. Recent political appointments and allocations of positions have further strengthened these discussions, according to political observers.

Amid these developments, criticism is also emerging from within sections of the party that leaders who joined the Congress from other parties, especially the Telugu Desam Party, are receiving greater opportunities. Because of this perception, some leaders have sarcastically begun referring to the current situation as “Cycle Congress,” a reference to the election symbol of the Telugu Desam Party.

They allege that after the party came to power, the influence of the Chief Minister’s close associates has increased significantly in key decisions, while long-time Congress leaders feel they are being sidelined.

The recent decision to nominate Vem Narender Reddy to the Rajya Sabha has further intensified the debate within the party. Several senior Congress leaders had reportedly been aspiring for the Rajya Sabha seat that recently fell vacant. However, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy travelled to New Delhi and strongly pushed for the seat to be given to Vem Narender Reddy. Even though there are many senior leaders who have worked for the Congress in Telangana for years, they did not get the opportunity, which has reportedly increased dissatisfaction among the old-generation leaders of the party.

Party sources say this decision has strengthened the perception that the Chief Minister is giving priority mainly to leaders from his closest circle. Many leaders who stood by the Congress during difficult periods now feel they are being pushed aside. Particularly after the bifurcation of the state, when the Congress was politically weak in Telangana, several district leaders and senior activists worked to keep the party alive. According to party insiders, some of these leaders are now expressing disappointment that despite their long service they are not receiving recognition or opportunities.

Internal comments are also being heard that leaders who joined the party recently are being given preference over those who have been associated with the Congress for many years. As a result, political observers say a visible divide appears to be emerging between the old generation of Congress leaders and the newly influential groups within the party.

Similar criticism had surfaced during the previous government as well, when it was widely alleged that a particular group, popularly referred to as the Bangaru Telangana (BT) batch, was receiving greater prominence. At that time, opposition parties frequently accused the government of concentrating key decisions, nominations and important posts within that group. However, with similar discussions now emerging within the Congress government, some observers believe the ruling party risks being seen as following the same path that it once criticised.

At the same time, some analysts argue that it is common for any government leader to function with a core team of trusted associates. They say every Chief Minister usually works with a group of leaders who assist closely in governance and decision-making. However, experts caution that if opportunities are not distributed in a balanced manner among different factions within the party, dissatisfaction can increase and lead to internal tensions.

Currently, the Congress party in Telangana includes several power groups such as senior leaders who have been associated with the party for decades, new entrants from other political parties and regional leaders representing different districts. In such a situation, political observers say Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will need to coordinate and balance all these groups carefully. Otherwise, coterie politics could lead to internal divisions within the party.

With the Congress now in power in Telangana, maintaining internal coordination has become a crucial challenge for the leadership. The party must balance the expectations of senior leaders, newly joined politicians and regional factions across the state. Political observers say upcoming nominations, appointments to institutions and other political opportunities will play an important role in determining whether the leadership can maintain internal balance.

Experts suggest that if future nominated posts, institutional appointments and political opportunities are distributed in a balanced manner among different sections of the party, dissatisfaction may be reduced. Otherwise, the internal differences currently being discussed within party circles could become more visible in the coming days.

Overall, new political alignments are becoming increasingly visible within the Telangana Congress. Political analysts believe that the decisions taken by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and how he balances the various factions within the party will play a decisive role in shaping the party’s political direction in the coming period.
