CARE Hospital, Hi-Tech City, Hyderabad has successfully performed a highly complex brain surgery to remove a fired bullet projectile from a critical area of the brain. The procedure was carried out on Gulem Mohamud Hersi, a 26-year-old young patient from Somalia, who sustained a gunshot injury to the head in his home country.

The patient was airlifted to Hyderabad and brought to CARE Hospitals in a comatose state, presenting with severe neurological deficits, including weakness in both hands and legs. After a comprehensive evaluation, the expert neurosurgical team led by Dr. Laxminadh Sivaraju, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, decided to perform a high-risk surgical intervention.

Speaking on the procedure, Dr. Sivaraju said, ‘This was an extraordinarily rare case. The bullet was lodged in a highly sensitive and critical region of the brain. The surgery required utmost precision and planning. Successfully removing the projectile without compromising vital brain functions was a significant challenge.’

The surgery marks a first-of-its-kind procedure due to the complexity involved in extracting a foreign object from such a delicate area of the brain. Post-operatively, the patient showed remarkable improvement and is currently on the path to a smooth and steady recovery.

Gulem Mohamud Hersi, the patient, shared his heartfelt gratitude, ‘When I arrived in India, I was unconscious, with no hope of what lay ahead. The team at CARE Hospitals gave me a new life. Their kindness, care, and skill have brought me back from the edge. Being far from my country was scary, but here, I felt safe, respected, and treated like family. I thank the doctors and everyone at CARE Hospitals for everything they’ve done for me.’

Nilesh, Chief Operating Officer, CARE Hospitals, Hitech City, Hyderabad, remarked, ‘This case is a testament to the advanced clinical capabilities and multidisciplinary expertise we have built at CARE Hospitals. We are proud to offer hope to patients from across the globe, even in the most critical of circumstances. Our teams remain committed to delivering world-class care with compassion and innovation.’
