A heartfelt rural romance anchored by soulful Telangana folk music

Kona Film Corporation's latest offering, Band Melam, produced by writer Kona Venkat, hit theatres on Thursday. Directed by Satish Javvaji, the film stars Harsh Roshan and Sridevi Apalla (Sridevi) as the lead pair, with Sai Kumar in a key supporting role. Kavya and Shravya served as producers. The movie, which built decent expectations early on thanks to the lead pair's previous success in Court, has kept up to its expectations.

Band Melam is a classic bava-mardhalu (cousin) love story set in a Telangana village. Yadagiri alias Giri (Harsh Roshan) and Raaji (Sridevi) are born on the same day and grow up together as close cousins. Family elders plan to marry them once they come of age. As they grow older, financial troubles in both families create emotional and physical distance.

Raaji shines academically and moves to the city for higher studies, while Giri, who has a deep passion for music, starts a local band with his village friends. However, the band fails to take off. Giri continues to publicly declare that his future wife is none other than his cousin Raaji. But Raaji's father, Sayananna (Sai Kumar), decides to arrange her marriage with another boy, and preparations reach the wedding stage. The rest of the film builds up with audiences wanting to know what would happen next. Does Giri achieve success in the music world? Does he ultimately win his cousin's love?

This cousin-love drama doesn't completely disappoint average family audiences. The Telangana rural backdrop is engaging, and the film highlights relatable elements like the money-minded nature of Sayananna's character, the importance of family bonds, and a gentle message (delivered through a supporting character working at Mango Music) that genuine help given in life never goes unrewarded. The first half moves briskly with light comedy that brings laughs.

It remains a watchable one-time entertainer. The film is set in Brahmanapalli village in Telangana. The lead pair, Harsh Roshan and Sridevi, deliver good performances. On the positive side, the movie gives ample space to popular Telangana folk songs, which play out enjoyably on the big screen. Tracks like "Bombay Pothanani Dani Manasu... Dani Botla Cheer Meeda Naa Manasu...", "Banthipoola Danda Atettuna Nenu Itettuna...", "Menamama Kuthura... Mardalu Pilla Maatalaadamammo...", "Maa Galli Lo Okkadu Poradu...", and "Dani Kudi Bhujam Meeda Kadava..." add a charming, nostalgic touch.

Verdict: Band Melam is a heartfelt rural romantic drama with decent comedy and enjoyable folk music elements. It would appeal to fans of straightforward family-oriented love stories. Overall, it is an entertainer.
