BJP's disconnect with youth growing: Uttam

Telangana Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Thursday alleged that recent developments in Delhi had exposed the widening disconnect between the BJP led Central Government and the aspirations of India's youth. He said democratic engagement, rather than repression, was the only way to address the concerns of students and young citizens.

In a statement, Uttam Kumar Reddy said lakhs of students were demanding transparency, accountability and fairness in public examinations and governance, but the Centre had chosen confrontation over meaningful dialogue. He said the Congress had consistently stood with students, youth and ordinary citizens seeking justice through peaceful and democratic means, adding that the right to dissent was a fundamental constitutional right.

The Minister praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for standing with protesting students and youth, describing his actions as courageous, compassionate and rooted in constitutional values. He said Rahul Gandhi's willingness to directly engage with young people reflected a politics based on empathy, accountability and public service. Uttam Kumar Reddy said the developments in Delhi represented a larger national debate on the future of Indian democracy. 

He maintained that governments strengthened democracy by listening to citizens instead of attempting to silence them. He added that history had repeatedly shown that the voices of students and ordinary citizens could not be suppressed for long.

Claiming that Rahul Gandhi's emphasis on protecting the Constitution and democratic institutions had resonated with millions, Uttam Kumar Reddy said an increasing number of people were viewing him as the country's principal democratic alternative. Expressing confidence in the Congress leadership, he said he looked forward to Rahul Gandhi leading the party to victory in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and becoming Prime Minister. He also highlighted Telangana's governance model, stating that welfare, responsive governance and democratic values could successfully coexist.
