In a significant move aimed at modernizing its public distribution system, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced the introduction of new, ATM card-sized ration cards, set to be distributed starting in May. Minister of Civil Supplies Nadendla Manohar revealed this initiative during a press conference on Tuesday, emphasizing the government's commitment to enhancing efficiency and transparency. The transition to these compact, technologically advanced cards is anticipated to streamline the distribution of essential commodities, providing greater convenience to beneficiaries.

The rollout of the new ration cards is contingent upon the completion of the ongoing e-KYC process, which is slated for April 30th. Minister Manohar clarified that these cards, while significantly smaller than the existing family ration cards, will retain all essential information. Furthermore, the government intends to utilize the card distribution phase to facilitate crucial updates to beneficiary data.

“During the issuance of these new cards, we will provide citizens with the opportunity to add or remove family members, as well as request split cards,” the minister stated. To fortify the system against fraudulent activities, the cards will incorporate advanced security features, including QR codes, enabling swift and accurate verification of beneficiary details.

A notable departure from past practices is the exclusion of individual photographs on the new ration cards. Minister Manohar underscored this policy, emphasizing the government's focus on impartiality and data integrity. He also said that; “The precise number of new ration cards to be issued will be determined after the e-KYC process is finalized, ensuring accurate and efficient distribution.”
