In a major public health initiative aimed at protecting children during the monsoon season, the Andhra Pradesh government will launch the ‘Stop Diarrhoea Campaign’ from June 16 to July 31 across the state. State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav announced that more than 3.75 million children below the age of five will receive free Oral Rehydration Solution packets and zinc tablets as part of the campaign.
Under the programme, each child will be provided with two ORS packets and 14 zinc tablets to help prevent and manage diarrhoeal diseases, which remain a significant cause of illness and child mortality. ASHAs, ANMs, and Anganwadi workers will visit households and Anganwadi centres to distribute the supplies and create awareness among parents.
The government has arranged the distribution of approximately 9.53 million ORS packets and 52.55 million zinc tablets across the state. In addition, all government hospitals and health centres have been directed to ensure adequate availability of ORS and zinc supplements for children presenting with symptoms of diarrhoea.
According to the World Health Organization, diarrhoea remains one of the leading causes of death in India. However, recent health surveys indicate a decline in diarrhoeal cases among children under five, with prevalence falling from 7.2 percent to 4.8 percent, largely due to improved sanitation, safe drinking water facilities, and increased public awareness.
Alongside medical intervention, the campaign will focus on educating communities about preventive measures such as exclusive breastfeeding, handwashing with soap, consumption of safe drinking water, and maintaining food hygiene. Health officials will also promote early treatment and proper hydration practices to prevent complications arising from diarrhoea.
The campaign is being implemented through coordinated efforts of the Health Department, Women and Child Welfare Department, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department, Jal Jeevan Mission, Municipal Administration, and the Education Department.
Minister Satya Kumar Yadav expressed confidence that the initiative would significantly reduce childhood illnesses and deaths caused by diarrhoeal diseases while strengthening public awareness about preventive healthcare practices.
