Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani on Thursday announced a massive Rs 10 lakh crore investment in artificial intelligence over the next seven years, pledging to make AI affordable and accessible across India, much like his group did with mobile data through Jio. Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit, Ambani said India cannot afford to “rent intelligence” and must build its own sovereign AI infrastructure.
He said Jio, along with Reliance, will develop gigawatt-scale AI-ready data centres in Jamnagar, powered by up to 10 GW of surplus green energy, and create a nationwide edge-compute network integrated with Jio’s telecom infrastructure to ensure low-latency, affordable AI services across sectors. The investment, he stressed, is long-term nation-building capital aimed at creating durable economic value and strategic resilience.
Ambani outlined five guiding principles for the AI push, including support for deep-tech and manufacturing, multilingual AI systems, data security and residency, high-skill job creation, and building a strong ecosystem of startups and research institutions. He said AI applications such as JioShikshak for education in 22 languages, JioArogyAI for healthcare guidance, JioKrishi for farmers, and JioBharatIQ for voice-based services have already begun rolling out.
