The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has completed mandatory biometric updates (MBU) for students in more than one lakh schools across the country within six months of launching a nationwide drive, benefiting around 1.2 crore children.

According to an official statement issued on Tuesday, the mission-mode exercise covers children in the 7–15 age group. UIDAI has made the biometric update in Aadhaar free of cost for one year starting October 1, 2025, to encourage wider participation.

The authority said it has “saturated” over 1,03,000 schools by organising special camps on campuses, allowing students to complete the process conveniently. In addition to school camps, children can also undergo the mandatory update at Aadhaar enrolment centres and Aadhaar Seva Kendras across India.

Officials noted that updating biometrics helps ensure smooth authentication while availing benefits under government welfare schemes and scholarships. It is also crucial for students registering for competitive and university entrance examinations such as NEET, JEE and CUET, where Aadhaar-based verification is often required.

UIDAI rolled out the drive in September 2025 after integrating its system with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) platform of the Union Department of School Education and Literacy. The integration enabled authorities to track the biometric update status of students and identify those due for the mandatory process.

Around 4,000 biometric machines are currently being used for the campaign, and the number is set to be increased to speed up coverage.

Children below five years can enrol for Aadhaar without submitting fingerprints or iris data, as these biometrics are not fully developed. However, updates are mandatory after crossing the ages of five and 15 years.
