91-year-old undergoes kidney cancer surgery at Kamineni

Kamineni Hospitals has successfully performed a high-risk kidney cancer surgery on a 91-year-old patient, highlighting that advanced age is not a barrier to curative cancer treatment when supported by proper medical evaluation and multidisciplinary care.

The patient, Sri Subhramanyam, a retired Central Government employee, was diagnosed with an aggressive right kidney tumour caused by Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC). Given his age, the case posed significant surgical and anaesthetic challenges. After a thorough assessment by a multidisciplinary team, doctors determined that he was medically fit to undergo surgery.

The complex radical nephrectomy, involving the complete removal of the cancer-affected kidney, was led by Dr. G. Avinash Reddy, Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Kamineni Hospitals. During the operation, surgeons carefully dissected the tumour from around the inferior vena cava and isolated the renal artery and vein before removing the diseased kidney. The procedure was completed successfully with minimal blood loss.

After surgery, the patient was admitted to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit, where he received round-the-clock monitoring of his heart and kidney functions, specialised respiratory care, pain management and early rehabilitation. Doctors said he is recovering steadily, with his remaining kidney functioning normally.

Dr. Avinash Reddy said the successful outcome reinforces that treatment decisions should be based on a patient's overall health and fitness rather than age. He added that coordinated care involving surgeons, anaesthesiologists, intensivists, nurses and rehabilitation specialists was key to achieving a positive outcome in this rare and challenging case.
