A full emergency was declared at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Saturday morning after an IndiGo flight from Visakhapatnam reported a suspected engine failure while approaching the capital. The incident involved IndiGo flight 6E 579, a Boeing 737 operating from Visakhapatnam (Vizag) to Delhi, carrying approximately 160-161 passengers on board. A full emergency was activated on runway 28 around 10:39 am following the pilot’s report of engine trouble.
According to preliminary information, the aircraft made a safe emergency landing shortly after 11 am (around 10:54 am as per some accounts). The Delhi Fire Services received the alert at approximately 10:53 am and immediately dispatched fire tenders and emergency vehicles to the scene as per standard operating protocols. The suspected cause is engine failure (or a technical snag detected shortly before landing, possibly involving high vibrations in one engine), though official confirmation from aviation authorities is still awaited
As a precautionary measure, a full emergency was declared, leading to temporary concerns for operations on the affected runway and potential disruptions to scheduled takeoffs and landings. Reports indicate that the flight landed without any damage to the aircraft. All passengers were safely evacuated, and no injuries have been reported so far. Fire department officials confirmed that the situation was brought under control quickly, with emergency personnel, including police and fire services, present on the ground to assess the aircraft and runway.
