Celebrating nine decades of public broadcasting service, All India Radio Vijayawada station has announced a series of cultural and public outreach programmes as part of its 90th anniversary celebrations. Officials said the events are being organised following directions from AIR Director General Rajeev Kumar Jain to commemorate the milestone across the country.
Addressing a press conference at the Vijayawada station on Saturday, Regional Channel Manager M. Someswara Rao, Programme Head G. Divya and News Head T. Henry Raj highlighted the institution’s legacy and future initiatives.
Speaking on the occasion, Someswara Rao said AIR Vijayawada has remained closely connected with all sections of society for nearly 90 years by serving as a platform for artists, farmers, youth and literary communities. He noted that legendary personalities such as M. Balamuralikrishna, K. Viswanath, Gollapudi Maruti Rao and Kongara Jaggayya were associated with the station during their careers.
Officials said AIR continues to evolve with changing technology while maintaining its reputation for credible and fact-based news. AIR currently operates around 585 stations nationwide, covering nearly 92.5 percent of India’s population and over 99 percent of the geographical area.
Programme Head Divya announced that special events would continue until June 8, 2026, as part of the year-long celebrations. A major cultural programme titled “Swara Sandhya” will be held at Tummalapalli Kalakshetram on May 10 at 6 p.m., featuring a vocal concert by the Sarvepalli Sisters and traditional Garaga dance performances. Winners of student competitions will also receive prizes during the event. She further stated that a special walkathon would be organised in the city on May 19 to mark the celebrations.
