A delegation of tribal leaders, retired civil servants and social activists led by Chanda Lingaiah Dora, former MLA and National Chairman of the All India Adivasi Constitutional Rights and Culture Protection Coordination Committee and its advisor Dr. J. Purnachandra Rao (Retd DGP), submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Telangana at Lok Bhavan on Thursday. The memorandum sought the effective implementation of the constitutional rights of Scheduled Tribes residing in the Fifth Schedule Areas of Telangana.
The delegation urged the Governor to explore constitutional measures to protect employment opportunities for tribal youth following the Supreme Court judgment which had provided 100 percent reservation for local tribal candidates in teacher posts located in Scheduled Areas. The delegation demanded comprehensive rehabilitation, full compensation and protection of tribal cultural and religious institutions before any further displacement takes place due the Polavaram Irrigation Project.
Another key demand was a comprehensive investigation by CBI into sand mining activities in the Scheduled Areas of Bhadradri Kothagudem and Mulugu districts. The tribal leaders urged the Governor to undertake a visit to Scheduled Areas in Telangana and interact directly with tribal communities to understand their concerns and review implementation of constitutional safeguards on the ground.
