Andhra University turns 100

The historic Andhra University marked the grand culmination of its centenary celebrations on Monday, commemorating a remarkable 100-year journey of academic excellence, intellectual legacy, and nation-building. The event, held at the sprawling Engineering College Grounds, unfolded on a spectacular scale, drawing thousands of students, alumni, dignitaries, and academicians, transforming the campus into a vibrant confluence of heritage and aspiration.

The celebrations were graced by an eminent lineup of national and state leaders, including India’s Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Odisha Governor K. Hari Babu, and former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu. Adding to the event’s stature were prominent figures such as education and IT minister Nara Lokesh, Union Ministers Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu and Bhoopathi Raju Srinivasa Varma, along with several legislators and public representatives.

The presence of global cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and acclaimed filmmaker Trivikram Srinivas, both distinguished alumni, added a unique cultural and emotional dimension to the celebrations. On this historic occasion, a commemorative postal stamp honouring Andhra University’s centenary was unveiled, symbolizing its enduring contribution to education and society.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu announced a Rs 500 crore funding package for the university’s development, outlining an ambitious vision to transform Andhra University into one of the top 100 global universities and top 5 institutions in India. He emphasized that universities must evolve beyond conventional teaching centers into hubs of innovation, entrepreneurship, and research-driven growth.

Reflecting on the university’s illustrious legacy, Naidu paid tribute to visionary leaders like Kattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy, the founding Vice-Chancellor, and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who later rose to become President of India. He also acknowledged the contributions of royal patrons and philanthropists who laid the foundation for the institution’s growth.

The event witnessed participation from over 25,000 attendees, with elaborate arrangements including German hangars, LED display systems, and segmented seating across 36 sections. Nine development projects worth Rs 112 crore were launched, and collaborations with international institutions such as the University of Florida were highlighted.

Minister Nara Lokesh, in his address, called for an additional Rs 250 crore investment specifically for research, underlining the importance of strengthening India’s scientific ecosystem. He stressed that Andhra University must emerge as a leader in cutting-edge domains such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and advanced research.
