Technical team to inspect Kothagudem airport sites on September 7

The Centre has taken another step towards establishing a greenfield airport in Bhadradri Kothagudem district, with a technical team scheduled to visit Telangana on September 7 to conduct a field-level inspection of four to five alternative sites proposed for the airport.

Agriculture, Marketing and Cooperation Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao met Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu in New Delhi on Tuesday and discussed the need for an airport in Bhadradri Kothagudem district and the studies conducted so far. As part of a preliminary feasibility study for the proposed airport, six locations in the district were examined. Seethampeta and Sujathanagar emerged as the most suitable sites, securing almost identical top scores. The study also found that around 667 acres of land required for the runway-based airport infrastructure was available at these locations.

However, before taking a final decision on the project, the Central technical team will conduct a field inspection of four to five alternative sites. The team will assess geographical and climatic conditions, land acquisition issues, suitability for runway construction and technical requirements for aircraft operations, among other factors. Tummala Nageswara Rao said Ram Mohan Naidu had assured him that further steps towards establishing the Kothagudem airport would be initiated if the report submitted by the Central technical team is favourable.

The Minister also said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is likely to discuss proposals for the Mamnoor (Warangal) and Adilabad airports with the Centre on September 2.
