The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is preparing to launch Green Water tanker services from November 1 to conserve groundwater and reduce pressure on drinking water resources, following directions from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The initiative aims to supply treated wastewater from sewage treatment plants (STPs) for construction, industrial use, parks, greenery maintenance and other non-potable purposes, particularly in view of anticipated El Niño conditions.
HMWSSB Managing Director(MD) Ashok Reddy reviewed the preparations with senior officials on Friday and directed them to expedite infrastructure development, tanker registration, filling stations and an online booking system.
Filling stations to match demand
Officials have been asked to assess demand for treated water across construction sites, industries, commercial complexes, government establishments and gated communities. Suitable government and private STPs will be identified to establish filling stations equipped with platforms, pumping facilities and flow meters.
GPS tracking and digital monitoring
All Green Water tankers must carry distinctive branding and GPS devices to ensure transparency and enable real-time monitoring of movements, delivery schedules and supply details. Electronic point-of-sale machines will record water quantities, bookings and deliveries digitally. A dedicated mobile application will integrate customer registration, online bookings, tanker allocation, GPS tracking, digital payments and delivery confirmation.
Treated water will be promoted for construction, gardening, park maintenance, road cleaning and dust control. Officials were also instructed to ensure regular water-quality testing and restrict usage to non-drinking purposes. Awareness campaigns will target industries, builders and the public. MD Ashok Reddy directed officials to complete all technical and operational arrangements before the November 1 launch.
