Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjana on Friday has issued a strong public alert against artificially ripened mango fruits. In a message on Social media platform X, Sajjanar cautioned that unscrupulous traders are using calcium carbide and other harmful chemicals to force-ripen mangoes, turning a beloved seasonal fruit into a potential health hazard. The Commissioner explained that chemically treated mangoes often appear uniformly bright yellow and glossy, especially those sold on roadside carts, while naturally ripened ones show uneven coloring.

Inside, Sajjanar explained the artificial fruit frequently remains raw and emits a suspicious chemical odor. Consuming them can cause immediate symptoms such as throat irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, while prolonged exposure risks long-term damage to the nervous and respiratory systems, doctors have warned. Hyderabad Police have already launched intensive monitoring through the H-Fast unit and are taking strict legal action against violators.

Sajjanar urged citizens not to be fooled by appearance alone and to check mangoes for unusual spots or color changes when washed in baking soda water. He appealed to the public to report suspicious vendors immediately by dialing 100 or calling the H-Fast helpline at 8712661212, emphasizing that protecting public health remains the police department’s top priority this summer.
