Director Ram Gopal Varma experienced a significant setback on Thursday when the Andheri magistrate's court in Mumbai convicted him in a cheque bounce case and sentenced him to three months in jail. Additionally, the court ordered him to pay a compensation of Rs 3.72 lakh within three months, failing which he would face another three months in jail. The case was filed in 2018 after a complaint by Mahesh Chandra, but Varma failed to appear in court for any of the hearings since then.
"With regard to the news about me and Andheri court, I want to clarify that it is to do with a 7 year old case of Rs 2 lakh 38 thousand amount, relating to my ex-employee. My advocates are attending," the filmmaker posted on his X account.
Advocates Rajesh Kumar Patel and Alok Singh, appearing for the complainant's company, submitted an affidavit before the court stating that the firm was engaged in the business of providing hard disks.It had provided hard disks between February 2018 and March 2018 to the accused, based on which various tax invoices of Rs 2,38,220 was raised. The accused issued a cheque on June 1, 2018 to the complainant, which was dishonoured for insufficient funds, it said.
