Prostate health: Symptoms men should not ignore

Prostate problems become increasingly important as men age. Frequent urination, difficulty starting, a weak urinary stream or waking repeatedly at night may be dismissed as ageing, but these symptoms can sometimes indicate prostate cancer. However, early prostate cancer may cause no symptoms. Age is a major risk factor, with the risk rising significantly after 50. Men with a close family history, particularly involving a father or brother, or genetic changes such as BRCA2, may face higher risk.

The PSA blood test can help identify prostate abnormalities, but an elevated PSA does not necessarily mean cancer, as benign enlargement, inflammation and infection can also raise levels. Doctors may recommend repeat testing, a rectal examination, MRI or biopsy based on individual circumstances. Screening decisions should be discussed with a doctor, especially for men over 50 or those at higher risk. Regular exercise, healthy weight and avoiding smoking support overall health.
